Courtyard Garden, Ilkley, West Yorkshire

A small overlooked north facing site presented us with the problem of very little sunlight and privacy. The solution was to embrace those elements and enclose the garden with a mixture of high hand-burnt larch fencing and a feature dry stone wall. A mixture of evergreen foliage, bamboos and a large Magnolia Grandiflora provide year round interest and texture. The lighting enables after dark use and a controllable mood, whilst the locally sourced pig trough water feature provides a relaxing background sound track, deadening the sound of the busy main road.
